What role does free-floating car sharing play for changes in car ownership? Evidence from longitudinal survey data and population segments in Copenhagen

Free-floating car sharing (FFCS) offers greater flexibility than station-based but seems to affect ownership less. This study looks into characteristics of people who changed or did not change over time and how an increase decrease relates FFCS membership, demographic attitudinal factors. The is based on users (n = 776) non-users 720) in Copenhagen surveyed two times within a 2.5-year period. Five population segments were created: dependents, avoiders, limiters showed constant different levels ownership; aspirers increased, sellers decreased time. segments' profiles range from dependents show high affective motives, perceived mobility necessities dependency at the one end, avoiders seem more driven by environmental norms instrumental relation car, other end scale. A multinomial regression predicting whether owners increased number cars household during project period found positive effect membership for decreasing ownership. However, was no longer significant when adding intention reduce first survey.
